Alex can't stop smiling; in fact he's still smiling when he hits the surgical floor. But then he's met with a whole mess of nurses and interns all dealing with patients, surgical patients. Patients who need scalpels and Alex- Alex could really do with some scalpels right about now. But what pisses him off the most is that Montgomery is probably somewhere on this floor. Probably with another patient, a surgical patient, getting ready to scrub in or something exciting (well something exciting for gynie) that she is definitely not including him in.

He doesn't feel like searching for her so he approaches the first nurse he can find who isn't doing anything (and lets face it, most of them aren't) and asks her to page Dr. Montgomery. As she does so Alex swears he hears his own pager go off, but then he looks down and it's definitely not his. And there are probably thirty pagers going off right now on this floor but he swears this one, this one went off the moment the nurse paged her.

He takes a step towards the on-call room that is directly to his right. He shrugs, knowing he's probably way off but pushes the door open anyways.

She's there. And she's crying. Shit.

"Ah, sorry. I um. I ah. Shit. Sorry."

Addison lifted her head up from off the pillow to find Alex standing at the door way. Great, just great, she thought to herself. This was exactly what she needed; an intern, walking in on her while she was having a breakdown. And not just any intern, it was Alex Karev, the intern that probably dispised her most, the intern that probably would have done anything to get dirt on her like this.

She wipes away her tears and goes on as if she hadn't been crying at all. "What do you want, Karev?" she asked assertively after swallowing the lump in her throat.

Right now, she really hated Mark for not having locked the door when he'd exited. Now she was left to deal with this.
alexkare_v on December 8th, 2006 07:06 am (UTC)
Alex could have read her a mile away if the room had allowed for it. She was obviously upset and even more obvious- not so thrilled at being walked in on. But what might not have been so obvious, but what Alex found himself clearly understanding, was the fact that she...was broken. In a way Alex hadn't been sure someone as solid as Addison Montgomery could be.

Alex was an ass. He knew it. Izzie knew it. Everyone in this hospital knew it. Except it wasn’t really the ‘ass-ness’ that Alex strove for, but more the constant surprise. Surprising people with his behavior thrilled him. The startling with the comments, the lude throw-backs, the shock-factor; that’s what it was all about. But right now Alex isn’t thinking about jabing her back during her weakness, right now it’s instint. And instictfully Alex is a good guy.

“I just have your results for 11b is all.” He knows he should be glancing down, shuffling his feet, retreating for the door, a number of any ‘get the hell out of here’ actions. Instead his steps all the way in and says the first thing that comes out of his mouth. “If it’s Sheperd whose being an idiot, I really think I could take him…”
Addison: cheekaddie_mcsatan on December 8th, 2006 08:42 am (UTC)
Addison looked up at him, a little skeptical about hearing Alex, the Alex Karev, say something like that. He was never the caring type or the understanding type, at least, she'd never assumed him to be either of those. Yet here he was, standing before her after having witnessed a small part of her emotional breakdown, and instead of running, he was standing here saying something nice (nice for Alex Karev anyway).

She stared at him for a moment longer, her tears having stopped falling by now, before she began to speak. "It's not Derek," she said quietly, not sure why she was even telling Alex. Deciding it was better that the intern know the absolute minimal amount of her secrets and problems, Addison said no more (for now).
alexkare_v on December 8th, 2006 09:21 pm (UTC)
Alex is almost certain if he'd been paying attention to anything but himself the last few weeks he'd have some type of clue to what she was talking about. But he hadn't been so he doesn't. All he really knows about the situation is whatever concerns Meredith and with that he really only caught the tail-end of conversations as she and Yang rounded corners.

"Well I'm neutral." He closes the door behind him as he pulls up a chair that was stashed in the corner, knowing at any minute she could throw him out and demand he go do rectal exams if she really wanted. He sinks into it, placing his hands behind his head as he does so.

"I've got no alliances." She's staring at him still trying to figure out what the fuck he's talking about or why he's staying and really Alex doesn't even know himself. "So you can say it. Because all I'll do is call whoever is making you feel like this- an ass. And come on that helps." He grins at her as he leans back in his chair.
Addison: baraddie_mcsatan on December 9th, 2006 01:58 am (UTC)
Addison stared at him, almost in disbelief. He was still the Alex Karev she'd come to be able to tolerate and enjoyed torturing, but somehow, he seemed to care. Alex actually appeared to be interested in what (or in this case who) was the reason for her breakdown, and she couldn't understand why or what had prompted this side of him. He just keeps surprising her and she starts to wonder if he was actually a decent guy.

Usually Addison would have yelled at him, told him to get out, made him do some gynecological procedure or test on a patient, or something, but instead, she sat there and watched him sitting in that smug position. He wasn't being an annoying intern at the moment, so she decided not to be (too much of) a bitchy attending.

"It's actually no one," she finally responded because really, it was the truth. The problem wasn't Mark, it wasn't Derek. The problem was, in reality, herself and her inability to get over her fears. She couldn't move on with Mark because she couldn't get over her fears of having them end up like she and Derek. It wasn't fair to herself or Mark, but she felt like she couldn't do anything about it. Relationships, real ones, were beginning to scare her. The unknown future that came with them was more than enough to make her turn around and walk away.
alexkare_v on December 9th, 2006 08:07 pm (UTC)
"You're telling me, you're in here all alone because no one said anything?" He smirks at her. "I've been working under you for a month now. You know you're a pretty bad liar right?"

He pulls his half eaten muffin still wrapped in cellophane from his lab coat. He takes a bite before holding it out in her direction, not moving from his relaxed state in the chair. "Muffin?"
Addison: addie 1addie_mcsatan on December 9th, 2006 08:39 pm (UTC)
She shook her head to answer his question and also just in utter confusion. It was unlike Addison to let an intern talk to her like this in an on-call room. It was unlike Addison to be in an on-call room with an intern at all, but she made no move to kick him out.

Addison was definitely intrigued by him. One day he could be the world's biggest ass, and the next he was being kind (in his cocky sort of way).

"Really, it's no one but myself, so there's no one you should take on," she said, a little surprised that she was opening up to an intern, and really suprised that that intern was Alex Karev.
alexkare_v on December 9th, 2006 08:50 pm (UTC)
"If you say so." He takes another bite of muffin before crumpling the remaining up in its wrapper and tossing it in the wastebasket across the room. He realizes he isn't talking to her as a co-worker or as his boss or as the bitchy attending whose been ordering him around since day one. Right now she's just a girl and Alex is bored, Alex just finished a conversation with Izzie so Alex is happy and Alex is hoping maybe now he'll get to scrub in on something.

"You hear-- Izzie's coming back tomorrow." He says it with a smile because he can.
Addison: addie 2addie_mcsatan on December 9th, 2006 09:05 pm (UTC)
"Really?" Addison asked. "I hadn't heard anything. That's great...that she's coming back." She nodded and watched him smile. It was obvious he was really happy about it. She figured that was why he was being so un-Alex today.

By now, thoughts of Mark (and Derek) were pushed into the back of her mind. They were still there, lingering until they felt like bursting out again which she hoped wouldn't be very soon. Her thoughts remained on what was happening now with Alex, with the prospect of Izzie returning.
alexkare_v on December 9th, 2006 09:18 pm (UTC)
"You know what you need?" He hands her the chart he'd been holding up to that moment. "Besides the chart. You need to get out. Get away from the hospital and everything going on in it." He knows his advice is right on because he's been sitting here and he's been starting to put it together. Sloan's here, been here and Alex works with her every day and the more he thinks about it, the more he realizes that her mood seems to fluctuate on the proximity of her and Sloan.

"All we ever do is work. Work with the same people and then after work we all go to the same damn bar. We need to get out." He half-grins at her because he's not even sure where this speech is coming from but he hopes it at least makes her laugh- a little.

And seriously, the girl needed to learn to have some fun.
Addison: baraddie_mcsatan on December 9th, 2006 09:29 pm (UTC)
Addison looked down at the chart, flipping through its pages. The patient seemed to be doing fine and so was the baby. Surgery was not necessary, at least not for today.

She let out a small laugh (more like a snort) as he finished his little speech before looking up at him and raised an eyebrow. "Is this supposed to be some sort of ploy to get me to take time off so you don't have to get stuck with me, Karev?"
alexkare_v on December 10th, 2006 05:50 am (UTC)
He laughs back at her because yes, they hate each other. Except it's in a--who has the best snarky comments-- kind of way. But he enjoys fighting with her and he knows she enjoys it right back. So he figures maybe she's not so bad after all and if she really didn't like him, she'd have kicked him off her service a long time ago and when push came to shove- they worked well together. He knew it. She knew it.

He tilts his chair back so it's balancing on two legs as he steadies himself with his hands on the wall. "Fine prove me wrong. When's the last time you did something fun? Something that wasn't tied up in the whole love-square thing you guys got kicking off."
Addison: baraddie_mcsatan on December 10th, 2006 07:25 am (UTC)
"Well, I--There was tha--...You know what, that has nothing to do with anything. I know how to have fun," Addison retorted after not being able to find any event in which she'd had fun outside the triangle-square-pentagon thing they had.

It truly had been a long time; a long time since she'd had fun, a long time since she'd been happy. The last time she was happy was probably with Mark. Not in Seattle, but in New York, before the whole sleeping with a nurse thing. She thought they'd have a chance, but he hurt her and then he hurt her again with his jealousy or whatever it was, and now, she didn't want to put herself out there for that again.

She glared at him, trying to make sure Alex got the message that she was right. She knew how to have fun. She just doesn't really want to, but then again, it would be nice to just get her mind off of everything for a while.
alexkare_v on December 10th, 2006 11:59 pm (UTC)
He grins right back at her as she stutters all over, attempting to redeem herself in the end. It doesn't work.

"I see your point." He mocks her but laughs slightly so she knows it's still in friendly context.

Addison: narrows eyesaddie_mcsatan on December 11th, 2006 12:12 am (UTC)
"Shut up," she said more playfully and less assertive than she normally would. Addison found herself being more different around Alex lately. She figured it was probably all the emotional stress with Mark and then the divorce with Derek. Either way, a lot of things had changed.

Addison stood up and straightened her clothing, bringing her hands up to wipe the dried tracks of tears from her face. Luckily, she hadn't been wearing too much makeup the past couple of days so she didn't look too badly.

"And what is your point supposed to be, Dr. Karev? Or more importantly, what's the purpose of making said point?" she asked, raising and eyebrow at him and folding her arms in front of her chest.
alexkare_v on December 11th, 2006 12:21 am (UTC)
"My point is--" He stands too, setting his chair back where he found it before addressing her. "I don't think you're capable of having any, fun." He pauses before punctuating the last word. "So either you have to live with that opinion of mine or prove me wrong. Your choice." And then holding his hands up in a somewhat defense before she can smack him with the chart or accuse him of coming onto her. "As a co-worker, possible friend? I could help." And then another pause before adding. "With the fun."

He hopes it sounds innocent enough. He's Alex so it's not entirely suppose to be innocent but for the moment it's at least suppose to come off that way.
Addison: baraddie_mcsatan on December 11th, 2006 12:33 am (UTC)
"You...want to help me...have fun," Addison said skeptically, pausing between each phrase to make sure she was getting this right. Sure, she had changed a lot due to everything she's been through since the prom incident, but she wasn't sure how much he'd gone through since then to cause this drastic change.

"What are you up to, Karev?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at him as she tried to figure him out.
alexkare_v on December 11th, 2006 01:00 am (UTC)
That's the easiest thing Alex had discovered when people were use to you being an ass. Eventually you got to the point where they always assumed you were up to something. Which you were--except usually they assumed it before you'd figured out what exactly it was.

"Fine. You want to die having had no spontaneous fun in life, go right on ahead. I just figure after Shepherd who seems a little...dry and now this Sloan who follows you around like a lost puppy--"

He turns to grab at the door handle of the room. "--Well-" He pulls down on the lever, not really ready to finish that sentence before turning back around to lean on one arm in the now open door frame. "You were distracted for the last ten minutes, weren't you."

It's not a question.

"See, I could be good for you." He pauses then to see if she'll react before leaning in slightly to whisper.

"I've got patients--" He winks at her then because really they're her patients before turning away and heading down the hall wondering if she'll stop him.
Addison: addie 1addie_mcsatan on December 11th, 2006 01:18 am (UTC)
"Alex, wait," she said, the words having escaped her mouth before she could stop them. Mainly, two things surprised her; the fact that she'd called him 'Alex' and the fact that she'd actually stopped him from leaving.

Truth was, he had distracted her for the last ten minutes and had done so quite well. She always knew his cockiness was always something she could count on to keep her mind off of things, but this seemed different somehow. It was genuine, as if he really had wanted to distract her.

Now Addison was standing by the door and Alex was 3 feet away from her, both of them in the hallway. Luckily for them (or maybe just Addison), there weren't many nosy hospital employees around.

She stared at him for a moment, not sure what to say. Her mind hadn't gone farther than just stopping him.

"What does having fun with you entail?" Addison asked finally in a soft voice in case there were people around to hear. She knew the question made her open to an infinite amount of sexual innuendos and she almost regretted it. However, she knew she couldn't take it back now so she stood there, her weight on one foot and prepared herself for his response.
alexkare_v on December 11th, 2006 01:31 am (UTC)
Alex? That had to be a good sign. He was tempted to counter her with a quick Addison but bit his tongue instead.

"Drinks. After work. Not Joe's. That'll give you plenty of time to back out."
Addison: addie 1addie_mcsatan on December 11th, 2006 01:53 am (UTC)
Addison nodded and kept her expression somewhat serious. She was somehwat suprised he didn't make some snarky comment towards her, but a little thankful. "Drinks it is then," she said calmly.

She just needed something (or in this case, someone) to distract her. She hadn't slept much the past couple of nights, constantly having something on her mind; things she couldn't get rid of. It'd be nice do something and be able to...live normally without all the drama for a change.
alexkare_v on December 11th, 2006 03:05 am (UTC)
He watched her respond, a little surprised that she was agreeing. Actually the whole thing would have been laughable an hour ago. But then he had run into Izzie and she had reminded him how easy it was for him to fall in love with her all over again. But Izzie was in love with a man that was twice the man he could ever be--she had told him that herself. Regardless if that man was here or not, it was the truth and Alex would not be the guy who pushed her into another relationship when she was so desperately trying to heal.

Addison however didn't completely disarm him. Yet she still somehow had some ability that made him not want to be an ass 100 percent of the time.

She needed distraction. He needed to be a distraction.

"Okay." He glanced to either side of them before looking back at her. "Normally I'd walk away right about now, but I'm guessing gynie needs help somewhere..."

She laughs at that as she smacks him on the arm with 11b's chart before heading down the hall to update their patient-- Alex following close behind.
